Inquiring Mind Wants To Know

Is anyone out there familiar with a breed of horse called the Moriesian? It's apparently a cross between a Friesian and a Morgan. Are people creating "designer breeds" with horses the way they are with dog breeds, i.e., labradoodles? People cross breeding purebreds and charging an arm and a leg for what is essentially a mutt. I admit to being pretty ignorant when it comes to horse breeds. I was horse crazy as a kid and read everything I could get my hands on about horses, yet never ran across the term "warmblood" until I was an adult. Are warmbloods really a breed or a cross?

  1. I remember when warmbloods first started getting talked about, and at that time, they were a cross between a hotblood and a coldblood. People were breeding TBs with draft horses.

Then, the European horses showed up, and they became the definition of warmblood.

Morisiens are like taking a hotblood and breeding with a warmblood. Does that make a warmer warmblood or a cooler hotblood?

I have Morabs--a hotblood crossed with a hotblood gives you another hotblood. That is why Cruiser, nearly 24 years old, still acts like he did 20 years ago--and I wouldn't want it any other way.

(Morabs are nothing new. Arabian blood was introduced into the Morgan breed long ago because it was such a pretty cross.)

  2. I can't keep up with all the crosses now days but I do know a warmblood is a cross. People are still breeding TB with draft horses, that is the kind I saw in NYC that the police officer was riding. Nick is a cross bred, half TB and half Welsh pony but looks like a TB that was left in the dryer a bit too long! ha!

  3. The European warmbloods are hotbloods crossed with coldbloods as well and if you think about it many of today's breeds are crosses of old. All of the light horse breeds have some Arabian in them. They're probably the only breed that started off on this planet and yet they breed them in designer ways.
