First Ride of 2011

Had my first riding lesson after two and a half weeks this morning. My mare had her left rear foot cocked in what I initially thought was a resting position. When she wouldn't stand on it so I could pick out her right rear I went and got the instructor to come look at her. She led her around, felt the leg and said she'd be back in a few minutes. Much to my consternation she came back leading one of the geldings. So here I am, rusty from not riding, my first time on the back of a horse since I was thrown and I'm expected to hop on a "strange" horse. This guy is not quite as forgiving of stupidity as my mare so my lesson was conducted on the end of a lunge line, much like the little kids. That's okay. I'd rather be safe than sorry and I can't believe how much I forget in such a short time.

  1. That was a very succinct story. A lot of tell in so few words. You must be feeling good that you made it through the lesson on a strange horse, but I'm sorry your mare is hurting.

  3. First rides of the new year can be pretty intimidating. I sure had my share in 2010 with my former horse Champ - truly thought he was going to kill me last winter. Hang in there. You will find that all the stuff you've learned comes back and riding different horses takes your further - granted warp speed is not what we always want! Look forward to hearing more. Don't give up! Always enjoy your Posts! :)

  4. You were very wise to go the safe route on a new horse. One just never knows the vibes that they might pick up from you if you were nervous and act out a bit. I have seen it happen over and over, a great horse will so often take advantage if they sense the new rider is a bit timid. Good thinking girl!!!!!
